Hi friends,
My husband is a letter carrier for the United States Post Office, which is a great job for a few reasons, not the least of which is the amount of vacation days he’s able to save up. He has this whole week off work, which means my week is going to be wonky. No bad wonky. But we haven’t planned a trip or any special outings, besides bringing the grandkids to the zoo, so we’re just going to be living like a couple of retired people for the next several days.
Wait. That’s not accurate. He’ll be living like a retired person, and I’ll be trying to keep up with my “full time writing and illustrating from home job” while he’s on vacation.
Which is not easy.
It’s not easy because I’m terrible at planning ahead. In most cases, I do things when they need to be done. Like this newsletter. Rarely do I have a draft of a newsletter before Monday morning, even though I often mean to. When I’m really on top of things I might have a rough draft by Sunday evening. But it’s a rare thing for me to be so organized as to have a newsletter polished and scheduled ahead of time.
And then there’s
. I’m a little better about that one, mainly because I have a great team that does part of the planning and writing and helps keep me accountable. But I still often find myself finalizing things on Wednesday morning before it goes out because there’s usually some detail I missed (like forgetting to include links to book titles). So, when hubby has time off, but we don’t plan a trip (which would have me scrambling to schedule things in advance), I get a little bit frazzled. Normally, it wouldn’t be a major thing. Managing two newsletters doesn’t take that much time really. Just a couple hours in the morning two or three days a week.
But this week is different! I’m working to prep a manuscript for submission by the end of the month. I’ve just gotten back into the groove of working on my illustration portfolio. And there’s that historical fiction novel in verse that I really want to get in shape for first readers by the end of summer!
I’m confident that I can keep up this week without sacrificing quality time with my hubby. If not, I’ll harness my super power of working under pressure and catch up next week.
But I really better plan ahead for August, when hubby will have TWO WEEKS off!
Can you relate?

Sweet pic. It’s an adjustment having hubby home while he does consulting. I have to close my door to my office/guest room to get work done.
