Thanks for sharing Merry Christmas, Dear Mars with your readers, Rebecca!

I love Laura Sassi's work. I haven't read Faithful Feet so I'll put that on my list. Plus I see some in your library haul that look interesting.

Right now I’m reading Battleship Musashi, and I can’t remember the name of the author. It’s the well-researched and told, true story of the building and sinking of the world’s largest battleship. It’s definitely not for everyone, but I’ve been fascinated by ships since early in my life. I’ve built over seventy model ships from kits and the majority of them are World War Two warships. Of course the Musashi is part of my collection. This ship was twice the tonnage of contemporary Allied warships and the builders took unbelievable measures to prevent the Americans and British from getting a peek at it during the four years of construction. Just one example: the ship was built at the Mitsubishi Corporation in Nagasaki and the British and American consulates were just across the harbor from the shipyard. The constructors hid the building slip from the prying eyes of the Allies by using over four hundred tons of hemp rope as screening, and they built a dummy warehouse as well to block the view. The shipyard workers had no idea of the scale of the structure they were building and the Navy crew assigned didn’t even know the name of their vessel until months after they had joined the combat fleet! I’m halfway through the book and for me it’s a real page-turner. I know from other reading that this doesn’t end well for the ship and her crew, but as a US Navy veteran (sonar technician), I just can’t put this book down. After this I have a biography of Greta Garbo on deck. I just love reading bios of Golden Age Hollywood stars. I read young people’s books too, though we don’t have any children. Not long ago I read a juvenile novel called Ice, and it was an excellent story about a young teenage girl who goes way above and beyond the call of duty to protect the children she is babysitting. Okay, I think that’s enough for now. Good night, Rebecca!

Sounds like you have a really diverse taste when it comes to reading, which is a great thing. I like to say that if you don’t read children’s literature then you’re missing out in some of the best books ever written!

Absolutely. There is often a level of sensitivity and trust in books for young people. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on surviving winter. My wife has failing eyesight and I often read aloud to her to give her a break from the television. We’re currently working our way through the Rose Handbook of Bible Charts, Maps and Timelines. There is also helpful teaching in the book. We’ve just read the chapter on the Beatitudes and the authors used a variety of verses from the Old and New Testament to help us understand what Jesus was talking about. Wonderful book, highly recommended!
